1971年テイチクより「愛は死んでも」でデビュー。 オーディション番組YTV『全日本歌謡選手権』に出場、10週連続勝ち抜きでグランドチャンピオンに輝く。
1973年の「なみだ恋」が120万枚の大ヒット。その後も「しのび恋」「愛ひとすじ」「おんなの夢」「もう一度逢いたい」「おんな港町」「愛の終着駅」など女心を歌った歌で次々とヒット曲を連発。
1979年には新境地を開拓した初の男歌「舟唄」を発表し大ヒット、1980年に発表した「雨の慕情」でレコード大賞を受賞。これら2曲は「港町絶唱」と共に、阿久悠と浜圭介そして竜崎孝路のコンビによる哀憐三部作と呼ばれた。演歌歌手にしては稀な連続ヒットと国民的ヒット曲により、女性演歌歌手として不動の地位を築く。
1982年センチュリーレコードに移籍し「海猫」「日本海」「恋瀬川」などを発表。そして1986年、日本コロムビアに移籍し現在に至る。
1973年第24回に初出場以来、1987年第38回まで15年連続で出場。
演歌歌手には珍しく、全盛期においては出す曲全て連続ヒットを記録しており、女性演歌歌手の中では総売上枚数がトップである。なおオリコンのシングルチャートにおけるトップ10獲得作品数も通算7作で2011年6月に水森かおりの8作連続シングルチャートトップ10を更新されるまで女性演歌歌手歴代1位をキープし続けていた。
また、アルバムも好セールスを記録しているため、オリコンの総合アルバム・チャートには5作品をトップ10に送り込み、演歌歌手としては、氷川きよし、五木ひろし、森進一に次ぐ第4位の記録である。
総合アルバム・チャート・トップ10獲得連続年数は3年連続（1974-1976年）で、演歌歌手としては、氷川きよし（7年連続）、五木ひろし（4年連続）に次ぐ第3位の記録。

I keep several blogs & forums and allow people to write their comments on them. I check regularly and remove any swear words, etc. I also ask commentors not to leave any derogatory terms on the blogs/forums.. However, that said, am i still legally responsible for the content on my blog/forums if they write a defamatory comment or abusive comments?. Many thanks..
