1980年4月21日、ロングヘアー姿で津軽三味線をギターの様に操る、演歌歌手としては異色のスタイルでビクターからデビュー。
キャッチフレーズ「帰ってきた男衆（やんしゅう）演歌」。
デビュー曲の「帰ってこいよ」がヒットを記録し、この年の第22回日本レコード大賞新人賞を受賞した。
1981年には『NHK紅白歌合戦』に出場。その後、シングル「お加代ちゃん」「菜の花咲いてた」「こんな男に惚れてみろ」「かえりの港」「天」などを発売。
2008年発売の「風の津軽」では、久しぶりに三味線を引きながらのスタイルを披露。
